Dr. Michael Kemp is a consultant at the Regional Department of Clinical Microbiology at Region Zealand and a professor at the Department of Regional Health Research at University of Southern Denmark.
Michael Kemp is an M.D. and a medical specialist in Clinical Microbiology. He has Ph.D. and DMSc degrees from University of Copenhagen. Since 2010 Michael Kemp has been a professor at University of Southern Denmark.
Since his first research as a student, Michael Kemp has been involved in development and clinical / epidemiological use of new laboratory methods. His Ph.D. and DMSc were mainly based on culture and characterization of human T lymphocytes in the study of protective immune responses for development of vaccines against parasites. Special focus was on establishing and characterizing clonal cell lines recognizing parasite antigens. Diagnostics and occurrence of parasitic infections has later become an important interest.
For the last twenty years Michael Kemp has been deeply involved in establishing and utilizing DNA sequencing of bacteria for diagnostic and epidemiological purposes. Initially, focus was on Sanger sequencing of 16S rRNA gene and other targets and since 2013 exploring application of Next Generation Sequencing, especially bacterial Whole Genome Sequencing.
Michael Kemp is an author on more than 140 reviewed scientific papers and has contributed to textbook chapters, etc.
Jørgen Engberg, MD, DMSc is senior consultant at the Dept. of Clinical Microbiology, Zealand University Hospital, Denmark since 2008.
Dr. Engberg received his medical degree from the University of Aarhus, in 1993 from where he also completed his residency. He then held research positions at Statens Serum Institut, the national institute for prevention and control of infectious diseases from where he also pursued his clinical microbiology training as well as at different Copenhagen University hospitals. In 2006, Dr Engberg received his doctoral degree (DMSc) from the University of Copenhagen.
His main research interest and focus for the last 30 years has been on gastrointestinal infections and includes the diagnosis, epidemiology, antimicrobial susceptibility and molecular typing aspects, in particular in Campylobacter, E. coli and Clostridioides difficile. In addition, his professional interests include faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), antimicrobial treatment and antibiotic stewardship. Dr. Engberg has published 77 articles in peer-reviewed journals and chapters in international books (ASM).
Xiaohui Chen Nielsen, MD. Ph.D., Senior consultant at the regional department of Clinical Microbiology, Zealand University Hospital, Denmark
Dr. Nielsen graduated as MD at China Medical University in 1995. She achieved her Ph.D. from Institute of Human Genetics at Aarhus University in Denmark in 2001. She entered the field of Clinical Microbiology since 2001, and was entitled specialist in Clinical Microbiology in 2010.
Molecular diagnostics has been her main interest and she has extensive experience of implementation and evaluation of new molecular diagnostic methods, including next generation sequencing, in the routine laboratory.
Her main research interests are taxonomy and pathogenesis of Streptococcus and related species based on genome sequence analysis and investigation of interaction between microbiome and human diseases. She has more than 50 publications in peer reviewed journals and book chapters.
Anne Line Engsbro, MD, Ph.D is a senior consultant at the Regional Dept. of Clinical Microbiology, Zealand University Hospital, Denmark since January 2023.
Dr. Engsbro graduated from University of Copenhagen in 2003 and received her Ph.D-degree from Copenhagen University in 2012 in the field of gastroenterology. She completed her training at the Departments of Clinical Microbiology, Hvidovre Hospital and Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen and Statens Serum Institute receiving the title as specialist in clinical microbiology in 2017. Until 2023, she held a position as a consultant at Dept. of Clinical Microbiology, Hvidovre with responsibility for diagnostics in gastrointestinal microorganisms and fecal microbiota transplant donor screening.
The main research interests are gastrointestinal pathogens including epidemiology, diagnostics and post infectious complications focusing on functional gastrointestinal diseases combining her fields of gastroenterology and clinical microbiology. Microbiome and point of care diagnostics are other fields of interest. Dr. Engsbro is currently entering the field of Infection prevention and control and expect to expand her research into this area.
